Hakuaido (博愛堂)

Hakuaido is a Japanese sweets shop on Innoshima. The store is famous for its “Hassaku Warabi Mochi,” which is made by mixing the juice of hassaku, a specialty of Innoshima, into warabi mochi, a type of rice cake with a characteristic plump texture. It is also a popular store that sells many Western-style confections using hassaku, such as the “hassaku wine cake,” which is baked with hassaku wine kneaded into the dough.

Hakuaido sells a wide variety of Japanese and Western confectionaries that showcase the citrus fruits of Innoshima and the Seto Inland Sea. One of the most popular is the “Hassaku Warabi Mochi,” or straw rice cakes with hassaku juice kneaded into them. These cold warabi mochi with the refreshing flavor of hassaku are perfect as an accompaniment to summer cycling. You can eat it as it is, but it tastes even better if you pour the sauce with hassaku pulp over it.
