Casual Japanese Eats
What do Hiroshima locals normally eat? It’s a lot more than okonomiyaki and oysters. Dig into rich, umami bowls of Japanese curry. Find fresh and affordable yet locally sourced kaiten sushi. Slurp up bowls of Sanuki udon, authentic Hakata ramen and sarashina soba. These choices are just a toe in the water, though. Wade in deeper to find crispy Edomae tempura, juicy Mochibuta tonkatsu, hearty bowls of gyūdon, steaming sukiyaki and more below. Our casual eats selection in Hiroshima is your insider on the local diet.

Mi-no-An (美の庵)

Located along the elevated JR railway line in the eastern Hakushima area, Mi-no-An (pronounced me-know-ahn)–easily recognizable by its large lantern–is a popular udon restaurant serving handmade Sanuki udon noodles, which are from Kagawa Prefecture but popular even here in Hiroshima. The compact interior, with only 11 counter seats, is bustling with local Hiroshimarian customers during lunchtime, sometimes even with a line stretching out the store. It is worth noting that dinner is only available on Fridays, but there is a special dinner-only menu awaiting prospective diners.

Mi-no-An allows visitors to Hiroshima to enjoy traditional Sanuki udon, which originated in Sanuki Province (the old name for Kagawa Prefecture). The homemade noodles, made using the traditional “sukashi-uchi” method, offer the chewy texture that is a hallmark of Sanuki udon. Customers can also order additional toppings such as green onions and tempura, letting everyone enjoy their udon to their liking.
