Casual Japanese Eats
What do Hiroshima locals normally eat? It’s a lot more than okonomiyaki and oysters. Dig into rich, umami bowls of Japanese curry. Find fresh and affordable yet locally sourced kaiten sushi. Slurp up bowls of Sanuki udon, authentic Hakata ramen and sarashina soba. These choices are just a toe in the water, though. Wade in deeper to find crispy Edomae tempura, juicy Mochibuta tonkatsu, hearty bowls of gyūdon, steaming sukiyaki and more below. Our casual eats selection in Hiroshima is your insider on the local diet.

Taiko Udon Nakamachi Branch (太閤うどん 中町店)

Taiko Udon in the Nakamachi neighborhood of central Hiroshima is a creative udon restaurant that has been loved in Hiroshima for over 40 years. By day, it is an udon restaurant where customers can casually enjoy traditional udon, and by night, it can be enjoyed as an udon izakaya where diners partake in udon, alcohol, and bar bites, all made with Hiroshima ingredients. Taiko Udon also boasts a robust vegan menu, so vegetarian diners can also enjoy their meals free of worries.

At the Taiko Udon Nakamachi branch, all udon noodles are made from scratch in the restaurant’s kitchen and served fresh to customers. The fragrant udon broth slurped alongside the noodles contains no artificial flavorings whatsoever and is made using only high-quality seafood stock extracted from natural Rishiri kelp and mackerel from Hokkaido.
