Setoda Komachi (せとだ小町)

Setoda Komachi is a rice cracker shop on Ikuchijima Island. The store, which is marked by a sign with the Chinese characters 海煎山煎 (sea roast, mountain roast) is a modern renovation of a vacant Japanese house. In the store, palm-sized rice crackers are sold in a demonstration, inspired by a local dish called “Hamako-nabe,” which is said to have been eaten by people who were involved in salt production on Ikuchijima Island for a long time. The rice crackers are covered with seafood such as octopus, shrimp, and small fish, and the crunchy texture is addictive.

At Setoda Komachi, you can buy rice crackers with the motif of “Hamako-nabe”. Hamako-nabe is a local dish that used to be eaten on Ikuchijima Island. It is an earthenware pot dish in which fresh seafood such as octopus, shrimp, shellfish, and small fish caught in the Seto Inland Sea are simmered with vegetables from Ikuchijima in miso. Setoda Komachi sells rice crackers filled with seafood and vegetables, based on the Hamako-nabe recipe.
