Araebisu Shrine (荒胡子神社)

Araebisu Shrine is a small shrine adjacent to Itsukushima Shrine. It is believed to have been built around the year 1400, and the entire shrine has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The contrast between the stone torii gate and the vermilion-lacquered shrine hall is stunning. The deity enshrined at Araebisu Shrine is Kotoshironushi, who is known as Ebisu in modern times. Ebisu is well known as a god of prosperity and business.
