This guide focuses on local creativity, craft and identity, helping you navigate a fashion landscape shaped by functional designs and a blending of cultural heritage with modern sensibilities.

Takada Hat Shop (高田帽子店)

The Takada Hat Shop was established in 1913 and was a favorite of the former Navy before World War II and of the Maritime Self-Defense Force after the war. In the small store in the center of Kure, you will find a wide variety of hats used by the Self-Defense Force in the past, and you can actually try on a hat before choosing one.

The Takada Hat Shop has been making traditional custom-made hats since its establishment in 1913. Using a sewing machine inherited from his predecessor, the owner himself carefully sews each hat one by one. Because the hats are very elaborate, the maximum number of hats that can be made in one day is three. The one-of-a-kind hats are adjusted to the wearer’s head in millimeter increments, creating a feeling of fit that cannot be experienced with ready-made hats, and have gained the support of many fans.
