Casual Japanese Eats
What do Hiroshima locals normally eat?
It’s a lot more than okonomiyaki and oysters. Dig into rich, umami bowls of Japanese curry. Find fresh and affordable yet locally sourced kaiten sushi. Slurp up bowls of Sanuki udon, authentic Hakata ramen and sarashina soba.
These choices are just a toe in the water, though. Wade in deeper to find crispy Edomae tempura, juicy Mochibuta tonkatsu, hearty bowls of gyūdon, steaming sukiyaki and more below.

Hot Oil Soba Matsunoya (ラー油蕎麦MATUNO屋)

Located near Hondori in the heart of Hiroshima City, Hot Oil Soba Matsunoya is a soba restaurant run by an udon shop established in 1916. Here, customers can enjoy the next-generation dish known as tsukesoba, which are dipped into a spicy dipping sauce made with hot chili oil.
NOTE: Only cash payments are accepted.
Moment of Joy
Hot Oil Soba Matsunoya lets diners enjoy hot oil soba, a relatively new soba recipe that adds the piquancy of hot chili oil to traditional dipping soba noodles. Of course, they also offer regular soba dishes that contain hot oil, so even those who don’t like spicy food can enjoy the buckwheat noodles.
