Onomichi Hanpu (尾道帆布)

Onomichi Hanpu is an Onomichi canvas specialty store located in the Hondori shopping street in Onomichi. Onomichi Canvas is a canvas fabric that has been produced in Onomichi for a long time, and is a specialty of the city. Onomichi Hanpu produces and sells a variety of items such as tote bags and backpacks made from the sturdy canvas that was originally used as sails for sailing ships. The second floor of the store is also an art gallery, where exhibitions and sales events are held.

The skilled craftsmen who have been making canvas in Onomichi produce a strong and light canvas through two processes: spinning and weaving. This manufacturing process has not changed since the beginning of the 20th century, and has been carefully passed down as part of the culture of Onomichi. There are also items dyed with persimmon tannin dye extracted from persimmons grown in Onomichi, which are popular among tourists.
