Set Meals & Bento
Looking for an affordable or portable meal in Hiroshima? Whether in the yoshoku (western influenced) or the washoku (traditional) style, what Hiroshima set meals have in common is a distinctly Japanese sense of culinary organization at budget prices. Discover your next bento lunch of wagyu beef over rice and enjoy it on a bench under the autumn leaves along the Motoyasu River. Find a place to sit down in a time-worn, Showa-era restaurant, elbow to elbow with the locals while you enjoy a teishoku set meal featuring a Japanese hamburger steak (hambagu). Eat in or take out Japanese home cooking with our selection.

Kuroben Kamiya-cho Branch (くろべん 紙屋町店)

At the eastern entrance to Hondori’s western half (west of the Hondori streetcar stop), the Kuroben Kamiya-cho branch draws onlookers with its jet-black exterior. Kuroben is a specialty shop for nori bento run by a long-established seaweed shop. A nori bento is a traditional Japanese boxed lunch consisting of white rice topped with a sheet of dried seaweed, followed by an entrée such as grilled fish or teriyaki chicken. The Kamiya-cho branch offers more than 10 kinds of nori bento and onigiri (rice balls).

NOTE: This establishment only sells food to go; customers may NOT eat inside.

Kuroben’s Kamiya-cho branch offers up high-quality nori bentos made with fragrant, premium nori carefully selected by a long-established seaweed vendor. The main courses served on top of the nori are all classic bento items such as grilled cod with Saikyo miso and kara-age (deep-fried) chicken, making it a great choice for anyone who wants to try “the most Japanesque” bento.
