Machiya Street (町家通り)

Machiya Street is one of the popular shopping streets in Miyajima. There are three routes from the Miyajima pier to Itsukushima Shrine, but walking down Machiya Street is the oldest and most elegant one. Machiya Street used to be the main street of Miyajima and is still lined with many souvenir stores and cafes. Many of the buildings are older than those on the current main street, Omotesando Shopping Street, so as you walk down Machiya Street, you can feel the history of Miyajima from the 17th to 19th centuries.

The charm of Machiya street is its relaxed atmosphere that is different from the bustling Omotesando shopping street that is the main street today. You can see the history of Miyajima and the lifestyle of the islanders. At night, lanterns hanging from the eaves of the stores are lit up, creating a fantastic scene that is completely different from the daytime.
