Miyajima Momiji-no-Ga (みやじま 紅葉の賀)
Miyajima Momiji-no-Ga, located on the island of Miyajima, is a store where customers can put on Heian-period (8th – 13th century) costumes, a rarity even in Japan, and walk around select parts of Miyajima. Tourists can enjoy visiting the Buddhist temple Daisho-in and taking pictures with the local deer while in Heian garb. On the day of the costume dressing, items such as conical hats and straw sandals will be available for rental, so visitors can come empty-handed! Besides Heian-period dress, the store also dresses customers in normal and summer kimono.
Moment of Joy
At Miyajima Momiji-no-Ga, visitors can don costumes and stroll around Miyajima as if they were on a Japanese period drama. Costumes available for rental include the “Tsuboshozoku,” worn by women of the nobility and samurai class on their outings from the 8th to the 13th century, as well as more modern kimono. Men have the option of donning a “Kariginu,” an outfit worn by Heian noblemen, if accompanying a woman who is trying on a tsuboshozoku.
