Traditional Culture of Miyoshi

Discover the charms of a smaller city in the hinterland of Hiroshima Prefecture. Miyoshi sports a winery with beverages and snacks made from fresh local fruits, a hot spring resort in the midst of the great outdoors, and a museum dedicated to demons of Japanese folklore. Put aside one day to escape the urbanized sites on the Seto Inland Sea in favor of good food and good times in mountainous solitude.

Day 1

01 Hiroshima Station (広島駅)

Hiroshima Station is the bustling transportation hub of our peaceful city, and one of the principal entertainment hubs as well. All JR lines in the city stop here, and from here, people can take numerous buses and streetcars anywhere in the city, or even out of town. The ekie shopping complex located inside the station building also has no shortage of restaurants and souvenir shops to keep visitors busy for hours.

02 Miyoshi Mononoke Museum (三次もののけミュージアム)

The Miyoshi Mononoke Museum is located about 10 minutes by bus from JR Miyoshi Station. It is the first public museum in Japan to focus on the theme of yokai, and contains about 5,000 valuable materials and artworks collected by yokai researcher Goichi Yumoto. The theme of the museum, “Yokai,” is a general term for ghosts, demons, and fairies that are believed to have existed in Japan since ancient times, and were thought to cause mischief and bring good luck.

03 Kimita Onsen Mori no Izumi (君田温泉森の泉)

Kimita Onsen Mori no Izumi is a hot spring facility located in Kimita Town, deep in the mountains of Miyoshi City. You can take a bath in the natural hot spring, which has been loved by the local people since ancient times, or stay in the cottage attached to the hot spring. Inside the facility, there is a market selling local products of Kimita Town where you can buy souvenirs. There is also a shuttle bus that runs between the facility and JR Miyoshi Station, making it easy to get there even without a rental car.

04 Miyoshi Winery (三次ワイナリー)

Hiroshima Miyoshi Winery is located in Miyoshi City and is one of the leading wineries in Hiroshima. The winery has won awards in various domestic and international wine competitions, and is a popular and talented winery. The winery has many facilities where you can learn more about Miyoshi and its wines, such as the factory where the wine is made, the wine cellar, the vineyard where the grapes are grown, the wine museum where you can taste and buy the products, and the restaurant.

05 Mitchan Flagship Store Hatchobori (みっちゃん総本店八丁堀)

Mitchan Sohonten Hatchobori is an okonomiyaki restaurant founded by Ise Mitsuo. Mitsuo was the founding father of the original okonomiyaki, the soul food of Hiroshima. Mitsuo established both the original look of today’s okonomiyaki as well as the styles of how it should be eaten. Methods include eating it with a spatula, and the option of pouring sauce on top of the okonomiyaki. The now-famous restaurant has a chain of stores all over the country. The Hatchobori main store is one of the most popular among the many Mitchan stores. In addition to okonomiyaki, it offers a wide variety of dishes that go well with beer and shochu.
