About Hiroshima

Eastern Yamaguchi Area

Just west of the border are the municipalities of Eastern Yamaguchi Prefecture: Waki, Iwakuni, and Yanai. First off is Waki, a small town with charming nature and the longest roller slide in the country. Iwakuni, the most well-known cross-border destination, is about a 40-minute train ride from Hiroshima Station, making it easily accessible. If one ventures a little further, quiet Yanai offers up whitewashed buildings and goldfish-shaped paper lanterns that are especially charming in the summer.

Iwakuni

Iwakuni is located just across the border separating Hiroshima and Yamaguchi Prefectures. Its proximity to downtown Hiroshima makes it an excellent choice for a day trip. The area has a rich history and is home to Iwakuni Castle. By the seaside you will also find a US Marine Corps base, where they invite the locals for Friendship Day every year. Another famous tourist attraction is Kintaikyo, a bridge that was uniquely constructed using a 5-arch design. Many people visit the bridge when they come to Iwakuni. Within the city you can find five sake breweries, including the world-famous Japanese sake “Dassai”, from the Asahi Shuzo brewery.
