Shusenkan (酒泉館)

Shusenkan is a sake bar run by Kamoizumi Shuzo, one of Saijo’s sake breweries, and is housed in a retro Western-style building built in 1929 as a sake brewery. For those who are new to sake, the “Sake Drinking Set” is a popular choice, where you can compare several kinds of sake. The restaurant is only open on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays. Please note that the shop is not open on weekdays or during the Obon and New Year holidays.

One of the best features of Shusenkan is that it offers a variety of pure sake made from only rice, rice malt, and water. In general, sake looks like clear, colorless water, but junmai sake has a golden color, like light honey. Junmai-shu has a mellow, sweet taste, which is rare for sake, which is usually characterized by its sharp taste. The most popular menu item at Shusenkan is the Kamoizumi Drinking Comparison Set. You can compare five different kinds of sake produced at Kamoizumi. The coffee brewed with sake brewing water is also popular.
