Goodspoon Hiroshima – Homemade Italian Cheese on the Old Carp Stadium Site

Fresh, in-house Italian cheeses in Hiroshima! Enjoy burrata, pizza, and more at Goodspoon on the historic old Carp Stadium site.

On the second floor of SHIMINT Hiroshima in Gate Park, lies Goodspoon, a rare eatery in Hiroshima. Opened in May 2023, Goodspoon is a popular stop for both locals and tourists alike. The name doesn’t give much away until you know what is most likely on the spoons of the people eating there: fresh, soft Italian cheeses made on site.

Soft Italian Cheese Buffet

The best way to enjoy cheeses like burrata, mozzarella, stracciatella and mascarpone at Goodspoon is during the workweek. Goodspoon offers “all-you-can-eat fresh cheese and bread” with their lunch special. Be careful how much you take at the cheese and bread buffet. It is deceptively filling. You might get too full to enjoy your main course.

Creamy Pasta

Signature menu items include, burrata bolognese pasta (王様のブッラータチーズ ボロネーゼ) and their cheese carbonara with egg yolk (濃厚チーズのカルボナーラ 濃厚卵添え). Both dishes give you the satisfaction of cutting into the signature topping, burrata or a fresh egg yolk, to witness the glorious ooze over your plate of pasta.

Hand-tossed, Wood-fired Pizza

Perhaps the most popular item at Goodspoon is their pizza. The burrata-topped pizza (王様のピザ), four-cheese pizza (クアトロフォルマッジ) and others are cooked one at a time in a traditional, stone, wood-fired pizza oven. You can watch the chef in the open kitchen hand tossing the dough, putting on the toppings, placing it in the oven and removing the finished pizza on a peel. The pizza takes more time to cook than at restaurants that use a conveyor belt oven. However, the result is more authentically Italian.

How to Get There

Goodspoon is conveniently found near the A-Bomb Dome at the front end of Gate Park. If you are coming from Hiroshima Station, take Hiroden Tram line one, two or six to Genbaku-dome Mae Station and cross to the north side of the street—the opposite side of Peace Park’s A-Bomb Dome. Look up and to the left of the main entrance to Gate Park. Goodspoon is right there.

More Great Pasta Choices

If you’re in the mood for pasta, try Greek Taverna Poli Kala on the southern end of Peace Park. This authentic Greek taverna serves Greek-styled Mediterranean pastas made with fresh, local ingredients from Hiroshima and the Seto Inland Sea.

Or try a fusion of Japanese sensibilities and Italian pasta at Pasta Ceppo. Located under the covered walking section of Chuo-dori on the western end of Hondori, you can find Japanese ingredient substitutions like Seto Inland Sea whitebait. You’ll also find Hiroshima-style spins on the cuisine like eating pasta dandan style—dipping plain noodles in a bowl of sauce.

The park and facilities around Goodspoon are a great place to eat, shop, explore and learn about Hiroshima’s history. Along the main road, in front of Gate Park, is the entrance to Shareo, an underground shopping mall with connections to SOGO department store, Hiroden and Astram Line train stations, and easy access to Kamiyacho and Hondori. Near the entrance to Shareo is Shiori no Mori, “Carp Victory Forest.” It is a relic of when the grounds were occupied by the original home of the Hiroshima TOYO Carp: Hiroshima Municipal Stadium. The stadium was demolished in 2012 after the Carp moved to the new Mazda Zoom Zoom Stadium east of Hiroshima Station. Shiori no Mori’s monuments chronicle the Carp’s victories over Nippon Professional Baseball’s Central League and its historic Japan Series victories in the 70s and 80s.
