Yakigaki no Hayashi (焼がきのはやし)

Yakigaki no Hayashi is an oyster restaurant located on the Omotesando shopping street on Miyajima. It is known as the first restaurant to serve grilled oysters on the half-shell, one of Miyajima’s most famous delicacies, and is still a popular choice for many tourists more than 70 years after its establishment. In addition to its signature grilled oysters, Yakigaki no Hayashi also offers a variety of other menu items such as raw oysters, conger eel dishes, and tempura.

At Yakigaki no Hayashi, they serve a specific type of oyster called “Jigozen Oyster,” that is caught in the Jigozen area near Miyajima. Jigozen oysters are characterized by their larger size and are richer in flavor compared to ordinary oysters. They are said to be one of the most delicious types of oysters that can be caught in Japan. When they grill oysters at “Yakigaki no Hayashi,” they steam the oysters in their shells over an open flame to ensure that the flavor and aroma of the oysters are preserved.
