Motomachi Aquarium Set To Grow Crops Inside Tanks!

As of Saturday, June 13th, the Hiroshima Momomachi Aquarium on Pacela’s 7th floor is now practicing aquaponics inside its own tanks! What is aquaponics, you ask? Good question, but the aquarium’s website answers that quite succinctly. In a nutshell, aquaponics is a next-generation, sustainable method of agriculture incorporating aquacultural and fish breeding techniques. Plants grown inside the tank are eaten by its inhabitants, which defecate and provide nutrients for the plants to continue growing, effectively killing two flying fish with one stone. These environmentally friendly exhibits are located in the Forest area, and will feature freshwater fish species such as the Japanese rosy bitterling and the dark chub, which will feed on delicious, nutritious crops like strawberries and cucumbers.
