Umi-Mori Art Museum Re-opened on August 22nd!!

Though most tourists visit Hatsukaichi City for the sake of Miyajima, there is one more tourist site that had gone unnoticed for quite some time until now: the Umi-Mori Art Museum. Its Japanese name is 海の見える杜美術館 (うみのみえるもりびじゅつかん), or literally, “Museum of the Forest Where One Can See the Sea,” because that’s literally the type of facility it is. The Umi-Mori Art Museum, which re-opened its doors on August 22nd after a long period of renovation, may be located on a hill far from Miyajimaguchi or Hatsukaichi Station, but is still accessible via public transport. There is a microbus that runs between JR Ajina Station and the front entrance of the museum, but failing that, a taxi from Ajina Station to the museum takes about 13 minutes and will set one back roughly ¥2,000. It is not recommended to take a taxi directly from Miyajimaguchi Station as there may not be empty cabs available at all times (lots of tourists there may be using them).

At the time of its monumental re-opening, there are currently two exhibitions inside the Umi-Mori Art Museum. They are “At the Shores of Art: Depictions of Water in Japanese Paintings” and “Young Seiho Takeuchi and the Times,” both of which can be seen with a general admission ticket. The Nihonga (traditional Japanese painting) above is one of Takeuchi’s works that can be seen inside the museum. This place is an ideal stop before or after touring Miyajima, so try to swing by during your time in Hiroshima!
