Araebisu Shrine (荒胡子神社)

Araebisu Shrine is a small shrine adjacent to Itsukushima Shrine. It is believed to have been built around the year 1400, and the entire shrine has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The contrast between the stone torii gate and the vermilion-lacquered shrine hall is stunning. The deity enshrined at Araebisu Shrine is Kotoshironushi, who is known as Ebisu in modern times. Ebisu is well known as a god of prosperity and business.

Since Araebisu Shrine is a small shrine, it is a hidden location that does not attract many tourists. Therefore, unlike other shrines on Miyajima Island, you can experience the shrine’s quiet and solemn atmosphere. Around November, a festival called the “Grand Festival” is held, and every year it attracts many visitors, especially locals. On the day of the festival, you can purchase a family protection charm with a sea bream on it, a symbol of prosperous fishing.
