Itsukushima Shrine Treasure Hall (厳島神社宝物館)
Ever since the Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima was built in its current state in the 12th century, many fine artifacts and historical documents were offered to it as tribute. At the Itsukushima Shrine Treasure Hall, a fraction of these precious offerings to the shrine are put on display. The Treasure Hall is located a mere few paces from the exit of the shrine so visitors can pay a visit to both as a set (state at the shrine ticket counter that you wish to see both). Inside the Treasure Hall is a hand-copied sutra that was written in the 12th century and designated as a National Treasure, as well as numerous blades and Noh masks on display; the collection attracts a bevy of tourists.
Moment of Joy
In the Itsukushima Shrine Treasure Hall, there are lots of valuable artifacts of display, but those form only a small chunk of some 4,500 items that have been donated to the shrine from the 12th century up to the present day. Depending on the timing of one’s visit, some items that are rarely displayed to the public may be available for viewing. Since a cost-effective combination ticket (admission into the shrine and Treasure Hall) can be bought at the Itsukushima Shrine entrance, it is recommended to explore both locales as a set.
