Shimanami Kaido (しまなみ海道)

The Setouchi Shimanami Kaido is a sea route that traverses the Seto Inland Sea from Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture, passing through six islands along the way. The 60-km route from Hiroshima Prefecture to Ehime Prefecture offers spectacular views of the Seto Inland Sea and a variety of sightseeing spots on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. All the bridges that connect the route of the seaway are open to cyclists as well as pedestrians and automobiles, and the area is known as a “holy land for cyclists” where many cyclists from Japan and abroad gather all the time.

The charm of the Setouchi Shimanami Kaido is that you can choose the course that best suits your physical strength and travel schedule. Of course, it is possible to cover the entire 60 km of the route, but even those who have few opportunities to ride bicycles and are not confident in their physical strength, or those who find it difficult to complete the route due to their travel schedule, can enjoy the route according to their own physical strength and schedule, such as to Mukojima Island, the nearest island from Hiroshima (about 400 m), or to the middle of the route by boat and then back by bicycle. You can also bring your own bicycle. Even if you cannot bring your own bicycle, you can rent a bicycle and enjoy the trip.
