Senkoji (千光寺)

Senkoji Temple is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Onomichi. The temple is located halfway up Mt. Taiho and is said to have been built about 1,200 years ago. The vermilion-lacquered main hall, also known as the “red hall,” is said to be unique in its beauty and has been preserved in many postcards and photographs since ancient times. The Senkoji ropeway, which departs from the foot of the mountain, is a convenient way to get to Senkoji. It takes about three minutes to reach the mountainside where Senkoji Temple is located.

The main attraction of Senkoji Temple is the beautiful vermilion-lacquered main hall and the spectacular view of the Seto Inland Sea. Senkoji Temple overlooks the Seto Inland Sea, so you can see the beautiful sea and the city of Onomichi from the main hall and the temple grounds. The temple grounds are also notable for the variously shaped megaliths. One of the most famous megaliths is the Jade Rock; legend has it that there was once a glowing ball at the top of the rock that illuminated the whole area around Senkoji Temple.
