Nakanohana Lighthouse (中ノ鼻灯台)

Nakanohana Lighthouse is a small, white limestone lighthouse built in the southwest of Osakikamijima. It is one of the “Nine Seto Lighthouses” that has been looking out for the safety of the navy in the Seto Inland Sea since the mid-19th century. It’s only a few minutes on foot from the hotel Seifukan on the precipice of the cape, where the Seto Inland Sea vista widens beneath one’s eyes. Because it is one of the prominent sights on the Shimanami Kaido, lots of cycling tourists visit Osakikamijima, and this lighthouse is known as a popular tourist spot.

At the Nakanohana Lighthouse, the contrast between the resonant blue sea and sky, and the white stone lighthouse makes for a scenic photo opportunity. On particularly clear days, one can see as far as the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge and even Shikoku, which is some ten kilometers across the bridge! Additionally, the view differs depending on the time of visit; during the day, one sees the coming and goings of boats below, and between sunset and sunrise, it’s possible to see the radiant orange glow of the lighthouse’s lamp.
