Nagae Pork Bun Shop (豚饅の店 長江)
On Onomichi Hondori, the city’s main shopping street, there is a shop called “Nagae” that specializes in the most famous steamed pork buns in all of Hiroshima Prefecture. From the tried-and-true salt flavor to the original curry flavor, Nagae dishes out a vast array of pork buns for customers to eat on the go. Because they are small enough to fit entirely in the palm of one’s hand, it’s highly recommended to buy a handful as snacks to munch on while walking around and enjoying Onomichi’s sights (be sure to throw your garbage in a garbage can after eating).
Moment of Joy
The secret to Nagae’s popularity lies in the pork buns that are steamed authentically in bamboo steamers. An adept worker meticulously steams the bite-size buns so that they are chewy on the outside and juicy on the inside, thus fine culinary creations with a horde of fans nationwide. There are about seven or eight different kinds on the menu but depending on the day they could all be sold out, so it is advised to visit in the morning if there is a certain flavor that catches your eye.
