Casual Japanese Eats
What do Hiroshima locals normally eat?
It’s a lot more than okonomiyaki and oysters. Dig into rich, umami bowls of Japanese curry. Find fresh and affordable yet locally sourced kaiten sushi. Slurp up bowls of Sanuki udon, authentic Hakata ramen and sarashina soba.
These choices are just a toe in the water, though. Wade in deeper to find crispy Edomae tempura, juicy Mochibuta tonkatsu, hearty bowls of gyūdon, steaming sukiyaki and more below.

Unagi Nakasho (うなぎなか勝)
Unagi Nakasho is an eel restaurant in Fukuyama. It is said to be one of the most popular eel restaurants in Fukuyama, and there is always a line out the door. The menu includes only eel dishes such as “Unaju,” a whole eel on a bed of rice, and “Hitsumabushi,” a dish of shredded eel on a bed of rice.
Moment of Joy

Unagi Nakasho serves eel dishes using only “Isshiki Unagi,” a brand of eel from Aichi Prefecture, a major producer of eel. The tightly packed eel meat is slowly grilled with a special sauce to create a luxurious texture with a crispy outside and fluffy inside. Unagi Nakasho also offers a wide selection of draft beer, sake and other drinks that go well with eel.
