Hohaikan (澎湃館)

Hohaikan is building located right in front of Ally Karasukojima, a tourist spot in Kure. The store inside the building sells original goods of the former Navy and Maritime Self-Defense Force that can only be purchased there, as well as souvenirs made in Kure, Kumano, and Etajima. Inside the museum, you can also see objects related to the former Navy and Maritime Self-Defense Force, such as a section that faithfully reproduces the interior of a Self-Defense Force submarine and a sofa that is also used in the crew’s private area.

The most distinctive feature of the Hohaikan Museum is its retro red brick building, which was built in 1900. It was originally a former navy warehouse used for torpedo storage and electrical maintenance, but was renovated into a tourist facility. The retro red brick exterior walls, which are registered as a Japanese heritage site, have been preserved, and you can buy souvenirs and drink tea in the café. There are also weekly and monthly events, such as solo exhibitions of artists, that will keep you coming back for more.
