An itinerary for those who want to experience the beauty and wonder of the many islands found in the Seto Inland Sea.

Day 1

01 Hiroshima Station (広島駅)

Hiroshima Station is the bustling transportation hub of our peaceful city, and one of the principal entertainment hubs as well. All JR lines in the city stop here, and from here, people can take numerous buses and streetcars anywhere in the city, or even out of town. The ekie shopping complex located inside the station building also has no shortage of restaurants and souvenir shops to keep visitors busy for hours.

Transportation: Miyajima Pier [JR Sanyo Line & JR Ferry, ~50 minutes]

02 Rental Kimono Miyajima Komachi (レンタルきものみやじま小町)

Rental Kimono Miyajima Komachi is a kimono rental store located a 5-minute walk from Miyajima Pier and a 6-minute walk to Itsukushima Shrine. It is located in an alleyway between the stores in Miyajima’s Omotesando Shotengai (the Main Street of Miyajima), so it is recommended to check the location beforehand with your smartphone or guidebook. The store rents out kimonos and yukata (thin summer kimonos), and you can also wear the borrowed kimonos to explore Miyajima.

03 Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社)

Itsukushima Shrine is a famous shrine located on the island of Miyajima within the city limits of Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. Itsukushima Shrine was initially built in the year 593, but it was not until the year 1168 that the military leader Taira no Kiyomori rebuilt the shrine into its present magnificent state. The gods enshrined at the shrine are known as the Munakata Sanjojin. (Three Goddesses of Munakata) They are believed to have power over maritime safety, fishing, traffic safety, and business prosperity. In 1996, Itsukushima Shrine was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Atomic Bomb Dome.

04 EBISUYA Miyajima (えびす屋宮島)

EBISUYA Miyajima offers a service that allows visitors to tour Miyajima on a rickshaw (a traditional Japanese transportation method). The Ebisuya rickshaw not only takes you to your destination but also provides you with a tour guide who can tell you more about Miyajima and its attractions. There are four different courses to choose from, and each course has a maximum capacity of two people per rickshaw (multiple rickshaws will be used to guide three or more people).

05 Omotesando Shopping Street (表参道商店街)

The Omotesando shopping street is the main street of Miyajima, with many souvenir stores, cafés, and restaurants. On weekends and holidays the street becomes crowded with tourists, as there are many nearby tourist attractions like Itsukushima Shrine or Senjokaku five-storied pagoda. There are many stores lined along the street where you can and walk around, eat and enjoy many specialties such as “agemomiji,” which are deep-fried momiji manju, and “anago chikuwa,” which is grilled conger eel fish paste on a (traditionally bamboo but now cardboard) tube.

06 Miyajima Ropeway (宮島ロープウェイ)

The Miyajima Ropeway is a ropeway that takes you to the highest mountain in Miyajima, Mt. Misen. There are two ropeway lines, the Momijidani Line and the Shishiiwa Line, and to get to the top of Mt. Misen the one-way trip will take about 13 minutes. On the ropeway, you can enjoy the spectacular view of Miyajima from above. There is also a free shuttle bus stop about a five-minute walk from Itsukushima Shrine, where you can take the shuttle bus to Momijidani Station, the closest ropeway station to the base of the mountain.

07 Reikado (霊火堂)

Reikado is a temple located near the top of Mt. Misen. Within Rekaido, there is a fire burning named the “Unquenchable Fire” that has been burning for about 1,200 years and is still burning at this very moment. It is said that the sacred water from the large tea kettle boiled using the flames of the Unquenchable Fire is effective against all kinds of diseases, and has been visited by many tourists since ancient times. In recent times, it has also become known as a place for lovers to pledge their unending love like an unquenchable fire, and is popular as a date spot.

08 Mount Misen (弥山)

Mount Misen is the principal mountain on the island, standing tall at 535m. Since Miyajima was known since ancient times as a sacred island where gods dwell, Mount Misen has been virtually untouched by humans, leaving intact a unique ecosystem of rare plants and wildlife in their natural habitat. For this reason, the entire mountain has been designated as a national natural monument.

01 Kinsuikan (錦水館)

Kinsuikan is a fancy, traditional ryokan located minutes away from Miyajima’s famed Itsukushima Shrine and bustling Omotesando shopping arcade. As one would expect from any ryokan, Kinsuikan offers exquisite meals in lavish dining rooms as well as hot springs with healing properties, and even day trippers can bathe in the afternoon or evening.  The rooms also feature views of either the Seto Inland Sea or the town, and guests can even order room service so they can enjoy the high life in solitude.

02 Koro Bakery (パン屋航路)

Koro Bakery (“Koro” referring to a “sea route”) is a bakery located about a five-minute walk from JR Onomichi Station. It is a very popular bakery with a variety bagels and other baked goods, and many tourists buy them for lunch. All the items are popular and the frequently baked, so the odds of finding a fresh batch are high. However, when all the bread is sold out, the bakery is closed for the day, so it is recommended to visit early in the morning or around noon.

03 Shimanami Rent-A-Cycle (しまなみレンタサイクル)

Traversing the Shimanami Kaido by bicycle either from Onomichi to Imabari or Imabari to Onomichi is a bucket-list item for a great many Japanese people as well as for tourists from abroad. Although going all the way provides the most enriching experience, it is more than possible to rent a bicycle from select points on Honshu, Shikoku, or any of the six islands in between. Those who wish to show up empty-handed can do so, as these Rent-A-Cycle stations have plenty of bicycles and helmets to lend, and customers simply pay by the day. Given how popular the Shimanami Kaido is year-round, tourists are advised to made reservations in advance during high seasons of travel.

04 Onomichi Port Bicycle Rental Terminal (尾道港レンタサイクルターミナル)

Shimanami Rent-a-Cycle rents out bicycles for cyclists who want to enjoy the Shimanami Kaido by bike. There are 13 terminals where you can rent bicycles, including Onomichi Port, Imabari Station, and on all the islands along the Shimanami Sea Route. With the exception of some bicycles, such as electric bicycles, all bicycles can be ridden away (returned at a different terminal than the one where the bicycle was rented).

02 Tadanoumi Station (忠海駅)

Tadanoumi Station is a humble station right by Tadanoumi Port, which is most tourists’ first stop on their journey to Okunoshima, the infamous “Rabbit Island” off the coast of Takehara. As such, the station sign also features a rabbit mascot to remind tourists to disembark here if they wish to see the bunnies. Its location also makes it easy to squeeze a quick visit to either Takehara Preserved Historic District or Mihara Castle in the same day as well.

Transportation: Okunoshima Pier [Omishima Ferry, ~15 minutes]

03 Ōkunoshima (大久野島)

Okunojima is an uninhabited island located about 15 minutes by ferry from Omishima Island, one of the islands on the Shimanami Kaido, and from Tadanoumi Port, a short distance from JR Tadanoumi Station. Okunojima has long been famous as the “Rabbit Island,” with about 900 wild rabbits living on the island. Okunojima is also known as the island where the former Japanese Army secretly conducted poison gas experiments during World War II, and the island is dotted with facilities such as the Poison Gas Museum.

04 Mihara Station (三原駅)

From the moment passengers step off the train, tourism is instantly possible as the Mihara Castle Ruins are visible from the platform. Mihara Station forms part of the center of Mihara City, and as such, numerous stores and restaurants of interest are concentrated around here. Drop by one of the okonomiyaki joints in the middle of sightseeing for an exclusive Miharayaki, renowned for adding fresh chicken offal as a topping.
