Day 1

01 Hiroshima Station (広島駅)

Hiroshima Station is the bustling transportation hub of our peaceful city, and one of the principal entertainment hubs as well. All JR lines in the city stop here, and from here, people can take numerous buses and streetcars anywhere in the city, or even out of town. The ekie shopping complex located inside the station building also has no shortage of restaurants and souvenir shops to keep visitors busy for hours.

02 Taiyakiya Yoshio (鯛焼屋 よしお)

Taiyakiya Yoshio is a beloved taiyaki shop in Akiota Town in Hiroshima Prefecture’s northwesterly Yamagata District. Boasting a history that dates back to 1970, this humble confectionary store attracts people from well outside Akiota, and on days off from work, lines can form and snake. Besides taiyaki, they also sell takoyaki, ice cream, jams, and homemade lemon soda.

03 Nukui Dam (温井ダム)

Nukui Dam is a gigantic reservoir found in Akiota Town, and serves as a tourist attraction in its own right due to its size. The streams gushing through the walls are a sight to behold. Aside from the dam itself, the surround Lake Ryuki hosts a variety of flora and fauna, and makes for a decent walk.

04 Toyohira Donguri Village (豊平どんぐり村)

Toyohira Donguri Village is a rural escapade for locals who yearn for the ways of old and need a break from their urban, everyday lives. The site is composed of four sections: Toyohira General Athletic Park, Donguri-sho (Acorn Villa), Sansan Market, and Musashi (a restaurant specializing in rice balls). Toyohira General Athletic Park sports wide-open grounds for playing sports, a fitness center, and lots of sports equipment available for rental. The Acorn Villa features a hot spring, a vegetable garden, a soba noodle-manufacturing workshop, and more. Sansan Market is chock full of plants for sale, and also has a café in which customers can sit down with a drink or some soft serve ice cream.

05 Musubi Musashi Donguri Village Toyohira Store (むすびむさしどんぐり村豊平店)

Musashi is a renowned and beloved restaurant chain specializing in rice balls, with branches all over the prefecture. One such branch is located inside Donguri Village, a highway stop-esque park in Kitahiroshima. In addition to the usual rice balls and udon on offer, the Donguri Village branch also offers “mountain bandit-style” items such as grilled quarter chicken (leg and thigh) to be eaten by hand or oversized rice balls packed with scrumptious ingredients.

01 Kagura Monzen Toji Village (神楽門前湯治村)

Kagura Monzen Touji Mura is a popular Kagura themed tourist spot located in Midori-cho, Akitakata City. The town of Mitosato has been home to the traditional art of Kagura since ancient times, and there are still 13 Kagura troupes active there today. In the vast grounds of Kagura Monzen Touji Mura, there are natural hot springs, lodging facilities, and a hall dedicated to the performance of Kagura, all lined up in a row. This creates an amazing atmosphere that will make you feel like you’ve gone to back in time to a traditional Japanese period. In addition to viewing kagura, visitors can also enjoy activities such as experiencing kagura.

02 Miyoshi Winery (三次ワイナリー)

Hiroshima Miyoshi Winery is located in Miyoshi City and is one of the leading wineries in Hiroshima. The winery has won awards in various domestic and international wine competitions, and is a popular and talented winery. The winery has many facilities where you can learn more about Miyoshi and its wines, such as the factory where the wine is made, the wine cellar, the vineyard where the grapes are grown, the wine museum where you can taste and buy the products, and the restaurant.

03 Okuda Genso Sayume Art Museum (奥田元宋・小由女美術館)

The Okuda Genso Sayume Art Museum is located in the center of Miyoshi City. Opened in 2005, the museum is named after the couple, Japanese-style painter Okuda Genso and Japanese doll artist Okuda Sayume, who both received awards for their contributions to culture. The museum has a permanent display of Japanese paintings by Okuda Genso and dolls by Sayume. It also frequently holds special exhibitions such as the Sylvanian Families Exhibition. The museum also has a tea ceremony room, where visitors can enjoy a tea ceremony experience on weekends and holidays for an additional fee.

04 Restaurant Yoshoku Kobo (レストラン洋食工房)

Restaurant Yosoku Kobo is a museum restaurant attached to the “Okuda Genso Sayume Museum.” The large windows offer a view of the museum’s beautiful garden, which changes its appearance with the seasons. The menu at the restaurant consists of casual course meals and French cuisine such as beef stew, and most of the dishes are made with fresh ingredients from Miyoshi. Limited edition menus are also offered according to the seasons, so you can enjoy new dishes whenever you visit.

05 Taishaku Gorge (帝釈峡)

Taishaku Gorge is a canyon that straddles Shobara City and Jinsekikogen Town from north to south. The gorge is about 18 kilometers long and is divided into several areas, including the Kamitaishakukyo area and the Lake Shinryu area. In addition to strolling through the canyon while taking in the natural beauty of Taishaku Gorge, there are many activities available for enjoying nature, such as cruising on a sightseeing boat or kayaking, making it one of the most popular spots for tourists from Japan and abroad.

02 Tomonoura (鞆の浦)

Tomonoura is a port town located along the coast of Fukuyama City. The city is also home to the Tomonoura Museum, which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Japan. Tomonoura is often used as a stage for movies and anime, and has appeared in such masterpieces as Marvel’s “The Wolverine” and Ghibli’s “Ponyo.”

03 Tai Tei (鯛亭)

Tai Tei is a Japanese restaurant located in the Tomonoura area of Fukuyama City. As the name “Tai Tei” implies (Tai being the Japanese word for red snapper), Japanese dishes such as tai-meshi (rice with red snapper) and tai-zukuri (red snapper sashimi), both of which use the famous Tomonoura red snapper, are popular as specialty dishes. The restaurant also offers a wide selection of alcoholic beverages that go well with the light flavor of the Japanese dishes, and at dinner time the restaurant has a lively atmosphere full of the local regulars as well as tourists visiting the Tomonoura area.

04 Senkoji (千光寺)

Senkoji Temple is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Onomichi. The temple is located halfway up Mt. Taiho and is said to have been built about 1,200 years ago. The vermilion-lacquered main hall, also known as the “red hall,” is said to be unique in its beauty and has been preserved in many postcards and photographs since ancient times. The Senkoji ropeway, which departs from the foot of the mountain, is a convenient way to get to Senkoji. It takes about three minutes to reach the mountainside where Senkoji Temple is located.

05 Mihara Castle Ruins (三原城跡)

The Mihara Castle Ruins are the ruins of the great Mihara Castle that once existed in Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Although only a part of the castle still exists, such as the castle tower (the stone foundation of the castle tower), the moat surrounding the castle, and the Funairi Tower, it is known as a popular tourist spot visited by most of the tourists who come to Mihara City for sightseeing due to its convenience of being just a short walk from JR Mihara Station. This is one of the few places in Japan where you can see part of the castle ruins from the platform of JR Mihara Station, or even from the JR train.

06 Suishin Yamane Flagship Store (酔心山根本店)

Suishin is a sake manufacturer based in Mihara with a history dating back to 1860. While the technology involved in making sake has evolved, the base recipe and high quality have not changed one bit. Since Suishin is so famous in Hiroshima Prefecture, sometimes they set up a temporary stand in other cities like Hiroshima or Fukuyama and hold sake tasting events.

07 Mihara Station (三原駅)

From the moment passengers step off the train, tourism is instantly possible as the Mihara Castle Ruins are visible from the platform. Mihara Station forms part of the center of Mihara City, and as such, numerous stores and restaurants of interest are concentrated around here. Drop by one of the okonomiyaki joints in the middle of sightseeing for an exclusive Miharayaki, renowned for adding fresh chicken offal as a topping.
